Red Sox win opening 3-game series vs Yankees

Boston Red Sox got off to a good start against their arch rivals New York Yankees taking 2 games out of 3 in the first of the series between the team at Fenway Park.

Chein Ming Wang threw a 2 hit complete game gem on Friday to get a 4-1 win for the Yankees. Giambi hit a solo homer off Buccholz in the 5th. Big Papi David Ortiz's troubles with the bat continued as he ended with an 0-for-3 performance.

Josh Beckett got the win in the 2nd game for the Red Sox with a very strong pitching performance. He struck out 6 over 6 and 2/3 innings. Manny Ramirez drove in 3 runs in the game with 2 RBI shots in the 2nd and the 6th inning. Papelbon brought into the game late after a 2 hour rain delay struck out A-Rod in 3 pitches in the 8th with 2 men on and 2 out for the Yankees. Red Sox winning the game 4-3.

Game 3 featured the pitching matchup between Dice-K and Stanford graduate Phil Hughes. Hughes was hit hard in the 1st inning itself which saw the Red Sox drawing in 3 runs and hughes throwing in as many as 30+ pitches to get through the inning. The Red Sox leading 7-1 at one point had a bit of a scare in the 7th, when the Yankees brought the score up to 7-5 and threatened with 2 men on, but clinical performances by lefty slinger Javier Lopez and Manny Delcarmen saw the Red Sox holding on to win the 3rd game, 8-5 against the Yankees.

Red Sox travel to Cleveland next for a 2 game rematch of the 2007 ALCS and then play 2 games at Yankee stadium on Wednesday before returning home for a 4 game set against the Rangers at Fenway Park.

Go Sox !!!
